Fashion Night Algiers – Theme Elegance
When you think of the latest fashions the first thing that springs to mind is Paris. However, Fashion Night Algiers Act IV creates a new imagining to the term. The show was held at the Ecole Supérieure d’Hôtellerie et de Restauration d’Alger (ESHRA) in Aïn Benian, Algeria on the 31st March 2018. The evening supported by the Ministry of Culture and produced by Index Communications.
I had the good fortune of being invited to the event by a fellow Australian and Algerian Ruby Boukabou from Ruby TV who performed a unique tap-dance whilst wearing traditional Algerian garments newly created by Nacéra Bouzar. Already a foreigner in Algeria I felt even more estranged among the crowd of VIPs. Diplomats, film and music personalities, press, artists and entrepreneurs adorned the crowd of this exclusive event. I went without the real intention of taking photos, not knowing what to expect, as it’s not really a genre I’m familiar with. However, as the first model entered the runway I scrambled for my camera ignited with excitement at the array.
The fashion designers combined traditional Algerian clothing with a modern flare followed by more contemporary styles. Additionally, setting its own stage the jewellery, carefully selected and paired, showcased many unique and traditional pieces. All the designers of “Fashion Night Algiers” produced high standards that will no doubt ripple through the international scene. The colours, bright and edgy, exuded joy and happiness. It was a pleasure to see fashion not compromising entirely to western influences. Garments from each region such as the Blouza from Oran, the Algerian Karakou, the Gandoura Fergani of Constantine, the Kabyle robe, Caftan and the Mlehfa Chaouia, continue to express Algerian identity and history.
Of Course, the designers a mix of seasoned professionals and new creative young talent took their designs to the runway with vigour. They included Nacéra Bouzar, Sabrina Lafer, Sam ia Hennous, Selma Hamrelaine, Amina Benyamina, Nihad Bellabas and Raouf Aliane. The makeup and hairstylings delicately crafted by Diartist and L’instant Make Up.
Furthermore, no evening would be complete without entertainment. The evening opened with a performance by the music group Gnawa “Wlad Bambra“ directed by Yousri Tamrabet. Throughout the evening, intermittent intervals gave an introduction to Algerian singers Chafik Baho, Manel Hadli and Adjrad Yuba to keep the crowd a buzz throughout the night.
The success of the showing brings forth the anticipation that another event towards the end of the year will bring new seasons designs to the stage along with a continuation for Algeria’s talents to shine not only on home ground but internationally.
